3 weeks ago as I walked by a pet store chain a woman was outside the store giving away her 3 yr old toy poodle because she could not afford to take care of her. My family decided to take the dog home. The woman gave us her registration papers and her vaccination record. At the time the lady was crying and stated she did not want to exchange contact info because it would be too painful. Now I realize I needed her signature to change the registration. You can try contacting AKC, and see if they will accept any proof of change of ownership, such as veterinary papers..
