1996 Nissan Maxima water pump changed, suspect the timing chain incorrectly lined up? Can anyone help?

Unfortunately had to rely on inexperienced mechanic. I'd like to give him instructions to put it right and avoid paying someone else to fix his mistake. I'd like instructions on how to see if this is the problem, and how to remedy if it is. Thanx1996 Nissan Maxima water pump changed, suspect the timing chain incorrectly lined up? Can anyone help?
In response to another answer, the timing chain DOES contact the water pump. That's what drives the pump!

I'm in the middle of changing my water pump right now on a '95 Maxima (same configuration).

If you suspect timing chain problem is due to the changeout, it could be that the chain tensioner was not reinstalled correctly since you need to retract the tensioner piston/plunger or remove it before removing the water pump.

However, I would highly recommend having a professional at least diagnose the problem before trying to do the repair yourself. Then you have some confidence on what's really wrong with it before diving into the timing cover - not fun! It might cost a few bucks for the troubleshooting, but it would be well worth it to avoid going down the wrong path and possibly making things worse.1996 Nissan Maxima water pump changed, suspect the timing chain incorrectly lined up? I would not for any reason let someone who is not experienced with vehicle touch your timimg belt. If they make one slight mistake you will be screwed, You can bend your valves. So no no no dont do it that way. Cause if you cant afford to have a professional do the water pupm and timing belt which is always best to do together you wont be able to afford for some to change you bent valves. Find a shop that will let you make payments..1996 Nissan Maxima water pump changed, suspect the timing chain incorrectly lined up? Can anyone help?
go to autozone.com, look up timing belt for you're vehicle. On the left side of the page is repair info, press on it and it will give you instructions, pictures of timing marks, and everything you need.1996 Nissan Maxima water pump changed, suspect the timing chain incorrectly lined up?
