How to tell if a jeep liberty 03 with a 3.7l jumped time or the chain broke?

i was driving along stoppped at a redlight and stepped on the gas and it just died. tried to jump it off didn't work. it is turning over just not starting ran a scan and it said it was either the cmp or cpm sensor or jumped time. any help on how to tell or how to change it would be a great help. i know the parts alone are 400 usd and tryin to save some cash if i can.How to tell if a jeep liberty 03 with a 3.7l jumped time or the chain broke?
the old school way to see if the timing belt/chain broke is to take off the oil filler cap and see if you can see the rocker arms or springs. and then have someone try to crank the car, if they move then the chain isn't broke, if the dont move then it did break. some cars you can see the rockers thru the cap and some you can't. if you can it will save you a bunch in tearing off a valve cover.How to tell if a jeep liberty 03 with a 3.7l jumped time or the chain broke?
the engine may be ok you need to see what codes you have first. The camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor need to communicate to keep the engine timing in sink as well as the ignition system working. You may need to replace these sensors the crank sensor sends a signal to the ignition to create the spark the camshaft sensor works with it.
