I have an eight year old mare that is alone on an acre. She does have a friend next door but there is a chain?

link fence between them. I never have anyone to ride with and I was thinking how nice it would be to have another horse in the field with my horse and someone to ride with. I was thinking of charging $100 a month and if they bought the food I would do the feeding when I fed my mare. Also I clean the manure out of the field every day and I would continue to do that. I also have a barn where they can come in and get out of the rain and the heat in summer. I keep shavings in the barn though my horse never lies down in there as she is free to come and go as she pleases. I also have another paddock thats about half an acre and I turn my mare out there a few times a week just for a change of scenery. I keep going over the pros and cons in my head and I need some help. One biggie is the insurance thing. I keep my horse on my mom's property so I absolutely have to know she is safe. Also what if the person said they loved to ride and then they never came out very often. My mare would probably start acting worse if I wanted to take her out without her buddy. What do you think? Sounds like a great idea, just make sure you are clear what you are looking for when you advertise for it, and get a good contract drawn up. (you can actually find some decent ones online and modify them). You want to include:

-you are not responsible for any injuries that may occur on your property

-you are not responsible for any damage to their horse or property

-how much board costs per period of time and when it is to be paid

-how long the contract is for

-you can terminate the contract at any time and they have 2 weeks (or whatever amount of time) to remove their horse from your property

-they are responsible for any damage caused by them or their horse

You could probably charge more if you wanted. But if you're mostly in it for a friend go for it. Have them pay for the feed and bedding and I'd say that's good enough!

get a goat! seriously my girlfriend had a situation like this and the lady skipped town left her horse and never finished paying. by a goat they are abotu nothing to feed they need hoof trims from time to time and my mare likes my goats better than our other horses. if you do want the extra income search online for boarding contracts so you are not held holding the bill and you would need to call about insurance so you are not held liable if the other horse gets hurt on your property. buy a goat seriously a lot less hassleI have an eight year old mare that is alone on an acre. Can you ride with the neighbor? That way, you and your horse get riding buddies, but no extra work, no insurance concerns, and probably no problems with becoming buddy sour.
